encyclopedie

This encyclopedia offers a splendid and wildly recommendable insight in the world of Croxhapox, combining trivial pursuit and serious matter. The entries have been mostly written in Dutch but quite a few have been translated. If you want the Dutch original, change your choice of language and go to the 'encyclopedie'.

'FOR ME, PAINTING IS A QUEST' ['SCHILDEREN IS VOOR MIJ EEN ZOEKTOCHT']
- review in a regional edition of a local newspaper (October 1998). Region Sint-Amandsberg/Gontrode. "If I would know it all, I wouldn't be painting" says Bart Baele. "For me, painting is a quest, although I don't know precisely what for." This young artist exhibits his paintings in Croxhapox, a handsome space in Aannemersstraat in Sint-Amandsberg./ Bart
Baele resided in Wetteren for many years and there gained a name as a popular card and performer, someone who has no problem animating the locals. That image of village fool  stands in sharp contrast to the dead serious artist Bart Baele./ "Perhaps one compensates the other" says he. "My artistic work is serious business, and I want to be recognised as a genuine artist. Painting is an intensive and continuous activity. Sometimes people seem to forget it is." GONTRODE It is blatantly obvious that his recent move to Gontrode has been a source of inspiration.  Baele first and foremost paints what he sees in his immediate environment: the house in Gontrode, the garden, views from the neighbourhood. "I found a very appropriate spot to paint in Gontrode: even the local neighbourhood offers a lot of views, and there is an attractive absence of noise. That is very important to me."/ The artist's work isn't purely figurative though. "There is no easy way to categorize my work," he says. "I start from some kind of representation but soon I move to more abstract levels." Perhaps this is why Baele's works keep intriuging and why they carry a hint of mystery. We think his works differ stylistically, but the artist disagrees. "All of this is me." BIDON The paintings effortlessly fit into Croxhapox' spaces,  The green landscapes and the country life scenes dominating the paintings tie up naturally with the balcony overlooking the patio: an organic continuity. / Bart Baele's former cycling-mania has all but disappeared. Cycling, though, was a prominent theme in his works a few months ago. No doubt because Baele was the co-founder of Bidon, the amateur cycling federation of Wetteren. "A wild bunch of weirdos who like to go cycling", he said. Apparently, that time is over. Baele symbolically created a distance: against a dark background, a cyclist we can only see the back of so to speak rides out of the canvas. Originally this work should have been included in the exhibition but it  didn't make the final selection. This too makes Bart Baele an artist to follow: who knows what the next exhibition will offer?" (P.B.)

1997. crox 65, Tomo-Savic Gecan.

crox 235, The F-Song.

2009. crox 298, BUT IS IT ART? Performance project and workshopby Canadian mail art artist Anna Banana. Coördination: Frips and Marc Coene.
The project coincides with a European tour of Anna Banana. Just before the project in croxhapox Banana was in Italy where she broke her right hand wrist. In Ghent it becomes a lefthanded performance.
In the project fair trade bananas are used. The first action is a street performance. The second part, a workshop and a lecture, are taking place in the Thomsen space.

bar

March 2008: duo project of Kati Barath and Oliver Schulze. Kati herself proposes to involve Oliver in the project.

VZW Barbabelge is a Ghent initiative with a.o. Wouter Cox, Jozef Van Akoleyen and Peter De Duffeleer. Before the official opening, end 1994, there is a meeting in the garden atelier of Aannemersstraat 54. Barbabelge takes the street projects of Croxhapox as a model and creates a furore with a series of widely acclaimed street- and neighbourhood projects. There are Jardins d'Artistes in 1995, the Twon Hall-project in 1996 and De Zwaluwen Komen [The swallows are coming] in 1997. Though Barbabelge and Croxhapox are closely realted, a collaboration never materilises, even is there is some talk about it after Open Doors (1996). Both initiatives make sure Ghent experiences an unwitnessed hausse of alternative and concentrated exhibitions in the mid nineties: Croxhapox develops an idiosyncratis and supriseful exhibition policy, Barbabelge stage socio-cultural interventions which are the talk of the town and get a lot of attention in the media.

End of the nineties, the initiative is broken up.

1996, Open Deuren. Location 88. Installation and performance in the basement of Aannemersstraat 11.

('To visit a place is thereby to begin it write it: the address not being written, it must establish its own writing.') A good artist does not even know precisely how he creates. That does not change the fact this first requires a thorough grip on the materials and techniques, to have blindly absorbed them, in order to listen to the hand and the 'diktat' of the drawing in progress.' 2003. van succeeds in tracing TB. He contacts him and proposes to do a project in Gent. A letter of Tatsurou's arrives, 3 handwritten pages covered with project proposals.
2004, December. They meet in Cologne, in the Artothek. The new plan is to use the Ghent Belfry as a location and to build a room around the dragon on top of the Belfry. Ninety meters high. He has been undertaking this kind of madness before. The plan is softly layed to rest.
2005. S.M.A.K. produces a project by Tatsurou Bashi. Location is the Christ statue at Sint-Annaplein. Tatsurou has alternative proposals for a smaller crox-project and possibly also for a presentation in croxhapox. One of the proposals he advances is a kebab lightning rod. After some logistical research - and the realisation that TB doesn't even know how to build a kebab lightning rod, we gradually saw that we would have to do all the work ourselves - the project is softly layed to rest.

A series of projects
where the preliminary phases of the artwork are central. Browsing in the
kitchen of the artwork.
At first conceived as
a tryptich:  (1) drawings and sketches,
(2) three-dimensional works, (3) photography.

Basics 1, crox 110
(November-December 2003, Lucas Munichstraat). Review by Christel Lemmens (ZONE
09, December 2003): “CROXHAPOX SHOWS ART IN PROCESS BY 25 ARTISTS. Artworks
don’t fall out of a blue sky. Usually they haunt the artist before acquiring
their final form on paper, canvas or computer screen. A lot of experimenting happens
before that final form is reached. Usually, the audience has no access tot
these preparatory drawings, sketches, doodles, digital drawings, studies and
notes.

Croxhapox Galery, back
again on the Ghent art forum, and now housed in the Dampoort neigbourhood, has
been rummaging unashamedly in numerous artists’ workshops and returned with
some two hundred artworks in process. Together the are the first part of Basics,
an exhibition focusing on processes of thought and development.

In Basics 1 Croxhapox
presents in its own idiosyncratic way new or recent works on paper by 25 Belgian
artists. A cat couldn’t find its young in the intuitive hanging of the works but
luckily galery holder and artist Hans van Heirseele gives a full explanation. He
enthousiastically alks about the the numerous works by young artists: the studies
for the series Explosives by Pieter De Gand, the digital prints of Wouter De
Corte, the triptych Pinocchioschedel [Pinocchio skull] by Peter Lagast from
West Flanders Province, the fragile drawings of Carole Vanderlinden and the
Walloon artist who lives in Ghent Sylvie Duhamel, the studies by Michiel
Coppens, the stills from Evert Defrancq’s digital film and the brushpaintings
of Robin Vermeersch.

There are one or two
works each by more reknowned artists such as Philippe Vandenberg, Michaël
Borremans, Carlo Mistiaen, Dirk Zoete, Karel Dierickx, Mario De Brabandere and Ludwig
Van De Velde.

There are, for
example, two studies of a ship’s demolition by Frans Gentils.

Visitors can browse
through a book of charcoal drawings of Boston based wonende Jos Van Meerssche.
Johan De Wilde, who according to reports should be localised somewhere in the Lofoten
Islands, shows an intriguing pencil drawing on archival cardboard. And
furthermore there are works by Bart Baele, Merlyn Paridaen, Nicoline Van Stapele,
Pieter Vermeersch, Ruth Mentens, Thomas Lerooy and Thomas Broadbent* (USA). It
may be a jumble but at least it makes a lasting impression.”

Corrections:
Explosies instead of Explosives - Decorte instead of De Corte – by Mario De
Brabandere there are three works, five by Dirk Zoete - Thomas Broadbent forgot
to send in his contribution. Instead of his, two drawings by Xenia Borremans
(daughter of) were selected for the project.
That a cat couldn’t
find its young in the hanging (the hanging in Croxhapox is chaotic etc…) is a
very subjective interpretation of the show which was conceived as a print
collectionl.

Concert, 13 January 2006. First night of the ARMEE LEGER project. Antwerp duo. One of the members of the AL-collective is at the drums. I can't remember who it was. I do remember who wasn't at the drums. Feyaerts wasn't. He stood on a ladder. Engels didn't. He held the ladder steady. Neither Decaluwe and Van Ham. Remains: Campaert. But that is something I'm not a 100% certain of. So, it was Decaluwe, maybe. Or Van Ham perhaps. Or Engels forgot what his job was. And was it Feyaerts who crashed into the drums, or am I mistaken?

Sint-Dionysiuskerk in Sint-Denijs-Boekel, Vredesplein 36, 9630 Zwalm.

Heel erg bedankt!
Hartelijke groeten

crox 145-II, BASICS 2 (sequel abbey Maagdedale, 2006). The hapax leentjegomenon applied to Waiting for Godot [Wachten op Godot]. Leentje Vandenbussche reduces Waiting for Godot, without interfering with the layout and the order of the pages, to the first spot where each word appearing is the text manifests itself for the first time, a procedure which is not quite what is normally meant by hapax legomenon. Apart from that it's spot on: the layout of Wachten op Godot thinned out till text where every word occurs only once.
In Lexicon van literaire termen (Wolters Plantyn 1998 [Lexicon of literary terms]) hapax legomenon is introduced as such: (Gr. used/spoken only once). Word or concept which appears only once in a language or with an author. Van Dale (fourteenth, revised edition) adds the following: hapax (the (m)); word found only once (in a text or language), isolated word or languistic occurence. after 1950 Gr., in full hapax legomenon (named once) hapax ciremenon (the (m)); hapax ciremena) (ling.) hapax. Gr. lit. 'the only once said' hapax legomenon (the (m)); hapax legomena) (ling.) hapax. Gr. lit. 'the only once named'

iemand tegen iemand anders aanloopt

2008. crox 272, paintings. A project in the cube.

I think. I only think because I begin. (diary entry, 1991)

The beginning: March 16th 1990. /crox 1/

October 1994, a new beginning. /crox 22/

Title of a review by Dirk Pültau: A new beginning. (De Gentenaar, January 1995)

Again: September 2003. /crox 105/

The start of a new, more experimental approach: crox 118, the first solo project of American artist CarianaCarianne.

The ritual of opening speaches began in 1994.
The first one happened at the opening of a project by Dirk Peers. /crox 23/

The first concert is by Peter Vermeersch, solo on saxophone during the solemn opening of En Passant in 1991.

The first person who was excluded from the society by an Exceptional General Meeting. /is/ Which was indirectly brought about by the second person who was excluded from the society by an Exceptional General Meeting.

The first publication is the catalogue of En Passant in 1991. The first book is Maud Vande Veire's. The first croxcards are published in 1994. They aren't printed but xeroxed. The first crox-card which was sold out was the one by Michaël Borremans.  First reprint: crox-card 39, Charte, by Christophe Lezaire.

The first piece from the series copy arts is by Sjoerd Paridaen. The second series starts with a work by Jurgen O. Olbrich.

Though croxhapox at the time was strictly non-commercial, Andre Posman (crox 6) creates a precedent in May 1991. Everything has a beginning.

The first project in Aannemersstraat is a solo by Herr Seele.

The first project where both floors are used is Thomas Hauser's in 1997.

The first project in Lucas Munichstraat is a solo by Frans Gentils.

The first project in crox2 is a solo by Carole Vanderlinden.

The first project in crox3 is a solo by Stefaan Dheedene.

The first project in the cube space is by the artist who designed it, Adriaan Verwée.

Eerste vaste locatie, vlakbij Sint-Jacobs.

'as such these little things aren't dramatical - they don't belong, neither by 'style' nor by realisation, to the better part of Ashley Bickerton's work. something is wrong, probably because the intimacy of the assemblages doesn't fit with the, all being said, rather bleak theme.' Mr. Probe says hello. Concert with Marieke Berendsen (violin) and Bruno Nelissen (e-guitar).
Opus by Merijn Bisschops: Operation Teapot, nieuwe probe, voor viool, e-gitaar, electronic devices en speeldoos. [new probe, for violin, e-guitar, electronis and music box]. This work could be best described as the aftermat of an open-air nuclear explosion.  From concentric air pressure fronts postapocalyptic sounds develop and slowly fade away. Radiation is descending during the  fall-out and in the radioactive matter, mutation commence. What's left over contains shards of noise and the unstable harmonics of an old wireless. Somewhere, a broken music box is played.
Operation Teapot has been commissioned by the NPFK+.

Crox-programma in CineRio, de filmzaal van De Koer, tijdens The Third Landscape. Les Blank, Burden of Dreams, 1982. 2011. crox 356. WARMING. Rudy Lycke & Evelyne Bleijenberg. Performance. 5 till 12 March.
Improvisation based on a weeks-long collaboration. Laundry, sound installation.
At times it turns into feirce activity. Agression, assault, mysterious violence.
Evelyne wrapped in foil. Water and later on both performers coming to a halt. Embracements. Not at all premeditated, they admit later on.

'Apart from the fact that some of the ladies from Axel had been at a birthday party till very late at might, they had no trouble defeating Nieuw
Borgvliet. After the first time, Axel already scored 3-0 and in the second half they scored four more goals. Final result 7 - 0. Goals by Alicia Huisman (3x), Debby Bakker (2x), Linda van
Meurs and Kimberly Boddaert (both 1x). Now, Axel is firmly in the lead of the 5th class ladies' sunday soccer competition. It seems they will be champions this season.
Debby Bakker walks over the entire defence of Nieuw Borgvliet and scores seconds later.' (ZMG*, 14 March 2011)
Evelyne, mid center for Dames Axel, hasn't been scoring for the aforementioned match. The evening before, there had been the performance with Rudy and later on, she had joined the party.

Two pictures: 'Eveline Bleijenbergh agilely avoids the defence of Nieuw Borgvliet' and 'Panic in front of the goal of Nieuw Borgvliet, Eveline Bleijenbergh only justs can't score with the head.'

In bloed gedrenkte teksten.

Crox-encyclopedia. Translation SVR. Van Ryssen translates the encyclopedia into English. Is used to doing the reverse. Specialist. Recently still a tome of 700 pagezzz. Turned the whole thing inside out. A laundry bag full of brown crossings. Fother for nerds and folk buzzing in front of a display. The other way round for the encyclopedia, literally, the text is supposed to fit in an idiom and a grammatical context foreign to his mother tongue. His father’s neither. He even deals with poetry. Then the little grey cells turn even more
grey.
van started writing the encyclopedia in the Summer of the year 2004.
CarianaCarianne said she thought it was a great idea, Captain Coene provided the structure. The Urtext has some fragments in the English idiom and shreds where van combines both languages. Ergo, another task, apart from translating the main part into English, rendering the English pieces in nice Dutch. A few examples: green, crox-poem, train, America, Verwée. Neither is van idle.
Updating the Urtext. The tranfer of the encyclopedia from the old to the new structure, which happened in one go, an artful intervention by Luc Pieters, caused quite some gaps. Stuccowork. An encyclopedia of this kind is never really complete. The Brittanica, to name but one, lacks Capello, a Venetian admiral, fifteenth or sixteenth century, immortalised by Titian, stunning, a gorgeous portrait. He is not in the Brittanica. They do know about a lady though, same epoch, similar
name, who poisoned her lover. There you go. When Capello was the head of the fleet, the Venetians lost all their games. Back and forth, already then it was that way. Capello didn’t know about the Brittanica, it didn’t yet exist, that makes quite a difference. Imagine realising, as an admiral, in your latter days: I won’t be in the Brittanica. Don’t worry, Capello, neither are we. And talking about battles. Poisoners though. The watering hole of insects, maggots, wormiforms, corpses, excrement. Why were you there, Capello. Look, listen, listen Capello,
Capello, listen, I’ve got an idea. /see Capello/

Three pages about a murder. In glaring letters at the front page: DE MORGEN MOTHER KILLED EIGHT OF HER TEN CHILDREN. As yet nothing much about the motive.

Sjoerd and Gwen consider cancelling the subscription. What De Morgen does day in day out, what they chuck at the front page, over and over again, the disasters and tragedies they can’t stop drooling about, the page long crap about a disaster in Duisburg, and now this, the coprophagic sentiment of a bunch of ciphers scratching themselves like scruffy dogs who in The State of Affairs meanwhile have risen to the status of a self-eating turd.

There is nothing else to say about the art and culture pages of De Morgen. Nothing meaningful can be said about them. The death of Willem Breuker (1944-2010), last weekend at the front page of  de Volkskrant [daily newspaper from the Netherlands], was missed. They had, if I’m not mistaken, an exclusive interview with Tom Jones. The word exclusive here is an expletive, mister Tom Jones does exclusive interviews all the time, the interviews of and with Tom Jones are about as exclusive as the mush from a dog’s arse.

Why did they interrogate the neighbours of the lady who killed eight kids? What is their business in the hole in Northern France. Let them stay out of there. It saves on petrol. The  paperazzi of the bathetic, it evaporates even before you could have read the words.  ‘Perfectly ordinary mother' it says, I read. That’s how they start this kind of writing:  ‘Forever the village of the children’s bodies.’ This kind of gutter journalism should be forbidden under penal law. Sensation with the depth of half a centimeter, nothing more. Just as often they don’t even know what they are writing about. On Monday they announce a newly discovered Rubens, on Tuesday it is not by Rubens. A piece on Fabre, one more stiff, easily goes down with the rest, the scum is paying, that makes a difference.  The thin ice of commonly known things, slippery without advancing 1 single centimeter. Clear away the garbage.

What they are good at, surprisingly, are green issues. The weird thing about De Morgen, muck is running down your spine, one or other semi-literary sect already is making plans to start your reanimation, and suddenly, just like that, even if you hadn’t asked for it, you read a piece on plankton. Plankton dissappears quickly, it says. They could as well have put that on the front page: plankton disappears. A mother and eight children’s bodies, it fades into nothingness. /see De Morgen/

Ornette Coleman at Gent Jazz, a quartet with Al Mac Dowell, Tony Falanga and Denardo Coleman.

Some radio channel had it that the concert was sold out. Petty, petty, childish exaggeration, the show isn’t even half full. We are up to the apple tree.

The set starts with a statement of Ornette on sax, his white and infamous vehicle of half a nickel. Ten seconds. After the short intro he alternates on trumpet and sax. Tony Falanga opens the second number, unplugged double bass with bow. It’s a slow motion track. Ornette is especially active. While in Brussels, bozar 2008 - note from the author - a person sitting next to me remarks, he left more to the band. Precisely. There is also 1 bass less than during that famous Middelheim
concert of the previous year. The third number is swinging up-tempo. Ornette turns to viola. It’s punk jazz, it’s virtuoso, it’s fantastic. And what strikes most this time: Coleman is exploring new territory.

Track 4 starts with Falanga and Mac Dowell in duo, with Denardo rolling over them with a ruffle after closing time. The slow tempo has a dark and erotic aura. The drama, tempered, the beautiful chants, pathos, exquisite, the roaring, the lamentations, moaning, the complications.

Track 5 is breathtaking: a multirhythmic confusion, streamlined confusion, a confusion of, what did I write, now, here, hardly to be unravelled, of extremes a confusion, beginning and end, up and downside, inside and out, everything reversed in a maelstrom of
atmospheres. Sounds crossing through one another and taking half of a passenger with them, at times the upper, at times the lower, sometimes the back, sometimes the inside halves, all together halting at the same platform where all the sounds get on and off simultaneously. I don’t know if this even comes close to what I had wanted to say.

6 starts with a pizzicato by Falanga, 7 is a cello suite by Bach. In Middelheim, three years ago, the audience roared, Denardo banged the bass drum, the meadow applauded. Now there is no laughter. And so much more beautiful it is this time, without the laughter, the dark and slow melo of the bass and the sound of the horn.

Next comes a clear and exciting bossa nova rhythm. Someone sitting next to me points out the shadow of Denardo’s hand at the bottom of the canopy. The shadow of hand and stick gigantically enlarged and hovering right above the audience.

What follows, extasy, first a blues, then a heavy swing, and another number, Falanga on bow and over and over again, in every detail, in every part, in every element, Coleman combining all the ingedients. Ornette Coleman, the starting point, the apotheosis. An uppercut. The audience is elated and shagged out.

blue Blue stands for shoe and dark blue means let's go,
at least in Leentje Vandenbussche's reconstruction of 'Waiting for
Godot'. Other colors involved in this pattern, based on hapax legomena
figuring in above mentioned book, are grey, red, pink, yellow, green,
dark green (or terre verte) and black.

A work called Basement, made from blue isolation material. It's part of the first WELD project, crox 194 (Nov-Dec 2006).

The desk in the crox-bar got a three-color tile-dress: green, red and dark blue.

Broken beamer,
that's what Joris Van der Borght wrote on a blue plastic chair, since
2005 part of the furniture in the crox-entrance. The chair belonged to
his crox 131 project, titled Sacre Bordel.

Beamer-blue makes an excellent rectangular blue.

Some of the drawings of Johan De Wilde's second crox-project (crox 178, May 2006) have a heavy blue color.

Some
of the paintings of Hans van Heirseele, actually these on crox-cards 10
and 17, have an allover blue tone. The blue tones and shades, often
added to some of the other colors, create an illusion of depth.

More blue in At Noon, crox-card NR 43 by Thomas Böing, and Magazine Figures,
crox-card NR 45, a rollerpoint drawing by Hedwig Brouckaert. Boïng
himself made a second edition of card NR 43, printed digitally at home
and without blank frame.

As you can see from this list the exhibition consisted of single works
or a number of works sent by individual contributors and a number of
corporate works which I had worked on together with other artists. Most
of the works were on paper but there were several sculptures, items of
clothing, a needlepoint, constructions in a variety of materials and
books. The whole exhibition is now in a large box in my studio and I
wonder what will happen to it next.......? I was certainly amazed by
the number and variety of the works received - and, of course, by their
creativity - but no, I guess this is, after all, the Creative Network
at work... Robin Crozier

crox-box donderdag 11 februari
Yeah. Right. I had been drinking coffee, & doing some of the things I
supposedly had to do, as David Ayleward and Steve Eagles came through,
followed by Ted & Thibault.
I knew Ted & Thibault of course, as Various Artists had introduced
them to his crox-show last year. Ted as well recalled how nice his
residence at Flandria Hotel had been. I hadn't met Dave and Steve.
Dave, travelling light, with nothing else but some minor tools & a
drum basket he couldn't miss, had the comfort of a SONOR Swinger dated
1975, the most recent set Merlyn bought. His material and likewise that
of The Singing Painters, since early 2011 a Sound Guerilla having Merlyn
and Me and no one else.
Steve and Dave ordered a beer. They had two hours before Peter from
YellowTape would turn to the sound-check. Dave made the drumset, used a
screw driver to tune the thing, Steve hung around ripping cords, Guy
dropped by, Ted tried his horn, Thibaut watched the proceedings. For an
hour or two we had nothing else to do.
Thibaut went to Flandria as he was the only one who had no need to get
the sound-check clear. For some time Steve went on picking the strings
of his green guitar. They had left, he and Ted and Dave, to the Turkish
bakery, when Peter from YellowTape came to the place and began to do his
thing, getting an unexpected load of material to the setup. This took
an hour. After that Ted, Steve and Dave did the sound-check. Peter from
YellowTape mentioned the idea to record the life set. Ted and Steve and
Dave agreed on that. Yeah. Right.
A girl entered the hall. I am too early, she said. Yeah, right, you are, I said. ( )

The set gave a steaming night. Blurt did their most recent record, Beneath Discordant Skies, and added some of the old material.
The dancing area spread to Brussels and Amsterdam and far beyond.
Beneath Discordant Skies is the newest thing. In particular I like the dancing area.

Thursday 28 September, 14:10 > 14:25 /day 28/
Thomas Bogaert

A ghostly, fragmented blackness reigns in the main room. At the back are strange, oblong objects. The darkness, pressingly ubiquitous, is attacked here and there by tiny sources of light. One of those sources coincides with the narrow staircase to the terrace one level up. Thomas is at the roof, or rather at the terrace. He is trying to reduce the incoming light to practically nil.

In the centre of the back of the space, the shrine made of Ytong blocks, or whatever is left of it, has been severely damaged. Nicolas' works have disappeared and also Stijn's interventions have hardly left a trace.
The mass of clay transformed into a cube by Anton is now on the small table, vomitthick jellyfish amorphish. The table sags under its ungiving weight. The second table is somewhere to the right and doubles as a workbench.

Thomas enters crox3, walks to the very back and starts the projectors. One tape has an English lesson, reduced to a recitative. The rattling projector creates a geometric gap of yellowish light against the dark back wall. ‘Je suis arrivé,’ says someone.
The voice of a woman, loud but less forceful than the male voice. The male commentator speaks English, she speaks French.
‘Arriver,’ the lady repeats. Naked and pure essence of the verb without declination. ‘To arrive,’ decides the male partner in the conversation. ‘I arrive.’
The recitative continues uninterrupted, with changing interpunctions, a due voci:
‘J’arrivais’...
‘I arrive.’
‘...Je suis arrivé.’
‘Arrive. To arrive.’

Thomas had been busy in the corridor, probably to check on the effect of the projection. The text streams in bright light and gradually widens like a funnel along the long wall: ‘ARRIVE. I SHE HE IT WE YOU THEY ARRIVE.’
He strides through the large space, kneels next to one of the projectors and adjusts the projection angle.
He presses the button and the wet darkness is flooded away, into the corridor.

‘Yeah... I am on those things... the superfluous things. I'll remove the superfluous things.'  is what Thomas concludes. He stares at the shrine of Ytong blocks where, now, there is only a sagging belly of clay, and the film projection.
‘J’arrivais,’ says a woman.
‘To arrive.’
‘Je suis arrivé,’ she explains.
Without explicitly addressing this author, Thomas explains that the other projector shows a recitative based on the verb ‘to prefer’. Because the second sound track is much more silent, it is hardly audible.
Thomas squats next to the apparatus and listens attentively for a while, eyes wide open. ‘I'll wait,’ he says. He uncoils onto his feet and steps on the clay sculpture. ‘I'll wait till Evert starts his projection to decide whether I'll have both projectors. It shouldn't be too much, should it?'
He moves towards the corridor. Just an instant later the room is flooded by bright white neon light.

Thursday 28 September, 15:05 > 15:25 /day 28/
thomas, evert/ track 2: marc coene, ria bauwens

Marc and Ria enter the main space. Thomas climbs a ladder and adjusts the position of the black curtains. In seconds, he hastens to the opposite side of the room to perform some corrective actions.
Marc and Ria study the projection apparatus. Thomas takes a break and ambles to the corridor. The rattling projectors resemble a puppet theatre made out of spots of light.
Ria makes close-ups of the apparatus. Marc concentrates on the projection in the corridor. Thomas is at the terrace. The recitative - delicate shifts in the order of both voices - is everywhere.

Thomas and Marc discuss something. Stijn's wall painting in the corridor is untouched; the film projection crosses it without hesitation.
Close to the source of the projection, where Ria is at work, there is a flash of bright red light.
‘J’arrivais... j’arriverai... Je suis arrivée,’ says the dame.
She repeats what she said sofort: ‘J’arrivais. J’arriverai. Je suis arrivée.’
‘I arrive,’ acknowledges the male conversation complement.
‘To arrive.’
‘J’arriverai...’
Thomas strides through the room, left, circling the central edifice. Marc follows behind. Marc and Ria question Thomas about the film apparatus. A moment later, they concentrate on their camera work. Thomas heads toward the narrow passage, leans against the post and studies the text, stretched like an elastic band.

In the corridor a dark silhoutte becomes visible: Evert. Somebody - Thomas? - has pressed the button, the main room is flooded in bright white neon light. Marc and Ria are taking images of the overall view.
Evert has a small green waterer and sprinkles the clay sculpture.
Thomas and Evert decide what to do with the projections.

2011. crox 363, MANIFOLD. Concept, text and direction: Sandrine Verstraete. Sam Bogaerts replaces Thomas Schorreel. He hasn't had the time to read the play, but nevertheless he needs not much time to make it his own. During one of the breaks he admits it is better the other way round. As an actor it is a lot more comfortable to know the lines by heart.

Sympathieke jongens.
A whirl of antennae.

That nasty and cool moustache, Chandler got loads of that, de boots, de Texan looks, dat take it ease pal, cool my finger. West Hollywood is Chandler and a line of Waits and a lot of waist too.

Haardvuur zit lekker.

real borders of the space / a void separating people' (from a text by Sofie Van

Gecan, crox 65 (1997), work in situ: a huge piece of glass, framed inside the
wooden structure of a double door (the door itself had been removed in an
earlier stage), divides the basement of Aannemersstraat 54 in two separate
spaces. The work is re-installed for the 2000 retrospective The First Ten (De
Eerste 10), final project of the Aannemersstraat-period.

seen often remains unnoticed; communication gets reduced to a line or two./

Brainbox unit
3 (Johan De Wilde, Peter Morrens, Ward Denys): a wooden wall obstructs the
passage-way to the main brainbox arena (crox3). The obstruction is painted
grayish dark and shows the title of the intervention: The Head. No visitor is
allowed to enter the brainbox arena. The only way to observe the performer,
captured inside the arena, is from a small viewpoint, constructed on top of the
terrace. See the the brainbox-file. This hide
and seek (or hide and look: work
and/or spectator hidden inside a framed space) is a usual transcription in
Morrens oeuvre and appears in a different, more remote way in works by De Wilde
and Denys./ The fourth brainbox unit (Michaël Borremans, Dirk Zoete and Tinka
Pittoors) creates a double-framed environment: the largest frame follows the
outline of the plaster arena, final result of the intervention of unit 3; a
smaller wooden frame is constructed around its center, changing the central
piece in a shrine, or magic box. Here, small figures can be seen at work within
the borders of a large, rectangular field. The title of the intervention by
unit 4 is Boxbrain: Anarchistic
ploughing (boxbrain:
anarchistisch ploegen)./ Brainbox unit 6: one of the spectators, trespassing
the borderline of an unspoken code, unsavoury writes silly signs and stupid
words on the phosphorescent carpet with a small flashlight, thus setting an
example for other visitors to act likewise./

At the end of 1984 Michaël uses the first floor of Beverhoutplein 7 as a
workplace. Thanks to Michaël, van arrives in the same building from end March
1985. Sharing the same premises doesn't lead to turmoil. van enjoys the
improvisations on the electric guitar by his first floor neighbour  and Michaël is puzzled by the improvisations
coming from the upper floor. At the end of the Eighties, Ghent knows no

Invitation to crox 33 (December 1995). Similar to the other crox-solo
invitations from that time, a short introduction was added: “We now see that
practically no other importance is attributed to an object of art but its
meaning, its content, its societal and historical relevance. / The formal
dimension is quasi-formally rejected as mere formality. Content comes first,
form follows. Or, to put it differently: without an explicit historical
contextualisation the artwork is damned - even before it has been created - not
to be understood, to be non-communicative../ After a certain lapse of time, contrariwise,
nothing is left and a work of art is but its form. Meaning, whatever meaning,
is mostly temporary. Contents get lost, meanings are forgotten. They age with
time and with time they lose their aura. / What remains is what at first was
deemed to be merely formal, the only non-fossilizing meaning a work can
possess: the object itself.

Edith Doove wrote, in “De Standaard” of March 10th, 1999: “An
exceptional combination at Croxhapox, where drawings of Marc Maet and paintings
by Michaël Borremens are shown. Usually the shows at the two floors are built
independently, but sometimes they collide nicely, which is currently the case.
Michaël Borremans presents a new series of paintings exploring the theme of he
fetish. Each image show an object or body part symbolising or objectively
fulfilling that promise. For Borremans, a deep and profound love fatally turns
thins into fetishes. The image of a common stapler turns into a symbol: it
keeps objects immobilised, suffocated.

The repeated use of cadmium red is this series is striking. Sometimes,
an object as e.g. the stapler or a pair of boots is painted in this remarkable
colours; something it overlaps the whole or parts of the painting in a haze, af
if through a filter. When turning around and viewed all of the paintings, the
red keeps striking one’s eyes. Borremans’ strength certainly is in the spatial
effect of his paintings. Each and every one is a world in itself, but
collectively, they become even more powerful.

See “Metro” (Feb. 1999) and “Kunstbeeld” (Dec. 1995).

Borremans’ name appears in obituary card used by Rein Wilem Gloudemans
for the catalogue of “En Passant”. The fact that Gloudemans could not have been
aware of the existence of Borremans is certainly proven by the publishing date
of the crox-catalogue: 1991, (4 year before Michaël Borremans exhibited for the
first time in crox). Whether Gloudemans discovered the obituary card in the
city where it came from, isn’t clear.

/1/ H-ART N°14 (December 2006), Inge Braeckman:
'Over the past three years now, exhibition space Croxhapox has been presenting expeerimental but interesting art under the guise of a series of projects called 'Brainbox'. This fall, inspirator and artistic director Hans van Heirseele again invited some twenty-odd artists of very different plumage to create an ongoing show in groups of three and in seven stages. The collaboration doesn't have to result in a finished product - contrary to what is currently common practice. It has to be, though, a temporary end product and starting point for the next group of three artists, who are responding to what came before. Art should always be a reply to what predecessors did. That is a maxime the Spanish-American author Jorge Luis Borges followed till the very end of his life, stressing that every great artist re-invents his forbears. The point of the arts is motion and back, view and re-view. Hans Van Heirseele understood this. In Brainbox, he first and foremost wants to mix well known and unknown artists and makes them reflect in small groups on the work the previous trio has produced. The art work as opera aperta, suggesting new shapes and interpretations. Because there are always three artists interact with the previous installation, the discours stays lively and dynamic.

The only disadvantage of the Brainbox concept is that you have to follow all interventions, one after the other, in order to get a real taste of it, otherwise you risk to miss the point or misinterpret the actions. Unit five for example, composed of Pieter Vermeersch, Lieve D'hondt and Eva-Maria Bogaert, had the audacity to show a white space: the floor, walls, ceiling, and even the mains outlets where covered in white paint. Unhesitatingly, this trio had taken down the very subtle and successful work by unit four, composed of Michaël Borremans, Dirk Zoete and Tinka Pittoors and simply dumped the parts in the corridor. You certainly can't accuse these artists of any kind of fetishism. Fortunately, Croxhapox records the stages of the Brainbox story and publishes them in word and sound on its excellent website - in case you missed one.'

/2/ At the end of the seventies, a visitor tells us, there was a DIY building package: a Box with everything in, on and about it. The big advantage: you needn't think about anything. It was a big hit. They used relays. You litereally didn't have to think about anything, everything was there, building instructions, components, circuitery etc. The only neede to be able to use a screwdriver.

/5/ The project is conceived as a process of mutation. The artists, joined in triples, wereallowed unlimited freedom to react to the products of the previous groups - even the very first triple who apparantly had no point of reference. Their freedom is literally unlimited because the artistic direction of Croxhapox never intervenes. But there are some constraints: it has to be a real collaboration, not an addition of individual show, the space itself (crox 3) and a limited budget of 1500 euro's. Another strong limitation is that the works produced are not to be carelessly destined to be dumped at the vault. On the other hand, nothing gets a label of integrity or originality: no artist can claim ownership over the results. The concept fit as seamlessly as possible into the definition of pure anarchy, total freedom, a freedom which, as soon as it is formulated in this way, requires a very transparant modus operandi.

One of the most remarkable results of the brainbox project is that this is indeed the case: anarchy re-generates an absolute sense of responsability which leads to a work process enabling literally anything without hampering others: la seule verité, c'est qu'il y a d'autres vérités. If 1 case is true, all is true .

On April 10th a trip to Paris; they visit the retrospective exhibition of Corot and dine in Le Polidor.

On April 11th a race to Zaventem; the Skoda stalls in one of the infamous Brussels’ jams; the chairman of crox haphazardly chooses an exit into the direction of Somewhere Nowhere and successfully delivers Thomas at the check-in desk with 5 minutes to go, cheerio.

At the end of October 1996 Thomas Broadbent visits Belgium again, this time just for fun. van and Thomas travel to London (via Calais, by Skoda) and turn up in Winchester, after a tour of Oxfordshire. Broadbent destroys, presumably not on purpose, some parts of the Skoda. In Oxford he realises he still carries the keys of the London hotel room. In Dover they meet a drugs squad and a police dog unearths a ham-and-cheese sandwich at the front of the Skoda. van can’t open the capeau [bonnet] of the Skoda. The British drug coppers were high as a kite till it finally turned out that the car was indeed quite empty of illicit substances. During this trip Thomas and van start addressing each other as resp 'Hastings' en 'Jeevers': "Hastings, you creepy son of a bitch, what's the goddamn problem?" etc.

Broadbent introduces Amy Kephart. In 1998 The Singing Painters (at that time exactly 2 months old) perform in Lier during the opening night of Broadbent's Voorkamer-solo. "Five more minutes" (a TSP standard from 1998) is dedicated to Tom. Later Thomas Broadbent is invited to participate in Basics 1 (crox 110, November 2003) but he fails to recognize some fundamental principles. He is the only one of 25 artists announced at the poster who has no work to show.

Among all American artists shown in Croxhapox from 1995, Thomas Broadbent is the only one (or the first one) who gets a firm footing in the alternative segment of the local art scene. Luk Lambrecht’s article in DM (1998) [De Morgen, Belgian Dutch-speaking ‘quality’ newspaper, n.o.t.] about the Voorkamer-interventions by Thomas Broadbent (the description could easily have fitted the crox-solo of Broadbent, 2 years earlier): "Most sculptures are made of high quality fabric and resemble anonymous headless inflatable dolls. In all works, he uses zippers, without confronting the audience with any erotical suggestion whatsoever. It is fascinating to see how Broadbent creates a tension that never becomes vulgar but rather raises sexual hypocrisy as a subject.”

Each artist participates as host of one of the other artists and is likewise guest of one of the other artists. The host could be seen as the passive conglomerate, the guest as intruder, as invité(e), invited to discuss the work of his/her host and point a favourite object - or work - or item, taking advantage of the fact that he or she is the active character in a meeting of two persons who know each other or don't. Croxhapox won't interfere in the process of meeting, talk and choice. The result of these 17 encounters makes the presentation.

598. Colette Broeckaert & Inge van den Kroonenberg. Part of The Third Landscape, a production curated by Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert & Samira El Khadraoui. 2019.

The Pursuit of the Gentlemen's Gentlemen draagt.
